ELSA

Emotional Literacy Support Assistant

Our ELSA is Mrs Katy Whitford.

Katy is a specialist Teaching Assistant with a wealth of experience working with children. She is trained and regularly supervised by the Education Psychologists working in Surrey.

All children need to feel happy in school to reach their potential and Katy’s role is to support children who are having difficulties socially or emotionally. They work with children individually or in small groups to develop the skills of emotional literacy. Examples include recognising and managing different emotions and forming relationships. ELSA sessions also help children to develop social skills and build self-confidence.

Giving children the opportunity to work with an ELSA can remove barriers to learning and help them engage and focus more successfully in lessons.

If we think your child would benefit from some ELSA sessions we will always talk to you first and then follow our referral procedure. You will be informed when Katy will begin to work with your child so that home and school can set shared targets.
